Wow!! What a morning!
Finally we got the chance to test Hundspann in Sälen, Hanna and Gabriel haven’t stopped talking about it since leaving Stockholm.
It all started with us arriving to a cacophony of exited dogs whimpering and howling with anticipation. And what beautiful dogs! If you are a dog lover then this is definitely an experience for you!
After a brief from Ludwig, our guide, we were each given our own sled and team. We couldn’t help but to go say hello to the dogs first who greeted us with all the happiness and enthusiasm of long lost friends. After wiping away the slobber, Hanna and Gabriel made themselves comfortable within the sled whilst I hopped on the back – and we were off!
Riding behind a team of these dogs through the pristine and incredibly beautiful snow covered forests is truly a wonderful experience, a fleeting connection to a forgotten time when survival often depended on the unique bond between man and beast. This is an experience I think I will do an injustice to if I try and describe the feelings it evokes, so I’m not going to try, instead I recommend you to get out there and test it for yourself – you won’t be disappointed, it’s an experience that deserves a place on any bucket list.
After a while we stopped off at a warm cottage for a very welcome coffee and hot chocolate. The fire crackling in the corner was probably even more welcome though. After warming ourselves, the now rested dogs were more than eager to get going again. So it was back on the sleds for the journey home and a chance to enjoy it all over again!
After this taster, I will definitely be booking the two day tour. And a big thank you Ludwig for a fantastic morning!
